At Glance…Indonesia Geographical

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago country, it has a total of 17.508 islands, stretching along 5120 kilometers from east to west, and 1760 kilometers from north to south. The island scatter over more than tenth of the equator between South east Asia and Australia/Oceania, covering a land area of arround 2 million square kilometers. Main Islands:

- Jawa, Bali, Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and papua

- There are two largest grouping of smaller islands name maluku and Nusa Tenggara Main Cities:

- Jakarta, the capital city of Republic of Indonesia, located the north west coast Jawa, is the government and an economic center of Indonesia

- Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city located in east Jawa, is leading Industrial center and port

- Medan in North Sumatera, is the third largest city near of Singapore/Selat Malaka

- Other important cities are Bandung, Denpasar, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Padang, Palembang, Makassar, Manado, Banjarmasin, Balikpapan and Jayapura

Demography and Human Resources

According to the population census 2000, the total populations is 203 million more. The distribution of population, however is not even, the island of Jawa with less than 7 percent of total land area is the home of almost 60 percent of the total population, while the island of papua that covers almost 21 percent of total land area is inhabited by only 1 percent of the total population. Population growth during the period of 1999 – 2000 is 1.35 percent/year.
