Collectors of Old Scrap
Many obsolete products find their way into the scrap system when they are discarded and then picked up by, or sold to, an informal network of collectors who forage for material behind repair shops, in municipal landfills, along the roadside, wherever these old items may be found. The collectors haul and sell the scrap to a processor. Other sources of obsolete scrap are demolition projects, salvage operations, replacement and reconstruction of worn out or obsolete plants and facilities. Approximately 65 – 70% of the US ferrous scrap supply comes from obsolete scrap … about 43 million net tons in year 2003.
